Depression And Anxiety

Depression and Anxiety

Anxiety and depression refer to common mood disorders that frequently occur simultaneously. According to the mental health professionals of Holistic Wellness Group in Fredericksburg, VA, working with individuals in-person and online, depression and anxiety may also manifest alone and, either way, may impact thoughts, emotions, and one’s overall physical welfare.

Depression Defined

Depression refers to a mood disorder typically presenting as persistent feelings of sadness and, often, a significant decrease in interest or pleasure in daily activities or social engagements once enjoyed.

The root causes of depression are complex and varied because there is no single trigger and many possible factors that may impact its development or progression. Depression may stem from a traumatic event (such as loss or illness), a family history of depression, biological changes (like menopause, pregnancy, or miscarriage), substance abuse, or life changes leading to loneliness.

Often, multiple factors in one’s life combine, causing depression to spiral downward.

Anxiety Defined

Anxiety refers to an innate response (which can also be described as a coping mechanism - both physical and emotional) that assists individuals in adapting to perceived threats, whether real or imagined. When appearing at an appropriate time, anxiety is normal and even beneficial in dangerous situations.

However, anxiety becomes problematic when it arises without any perceived threat or remains chronic after the danger has passed. Anxiety can be further categorized as -

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder – Excessive worry about everyday aspects of life, such as relationships, work, and health.
  • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder – PTSD refers to the aftermath of experiencing a traumatic event. Symptoms vary but often include the following – flashbacks, intense anxiety, nightmares, and more.
  • Social Anxiety Disorder – Avoidance of social situations for fear of judgment, embarrassment, or humiliation.
  • Phobias - Intense fears about specific objects or situations, such as flying, heights, or crowds.
  • Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder – OCD is characterized by obsessions (persistent/unwanted thoughts) and compulsions (repetitive behaviors/mental acts) that help to reduce existing or rising anxiety.
  • Panic Disorder – Episodes of unexpected, powerful fear or discomfort often accompanied by sweating, a racing heart, and other symptoms.
